I have to start this post with a simple statement. I LOVE me some Tula Pink! Her quirky way of looking at simple things
engages my brain like few other fabric designers can. I mean who ever thought to themselves, ‘I
think I will make an entire fabric line based on a purple raccoon’? Simply fabulous! <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
About a year ago, the man and I were driving around
Knoxville Tennessee and Google helped us find the greatest little store. I had seen pictures of Tula’s ‘Elizabeth’
line but hadn’t fondled any of it yet. I
wandered through the fabrics oogling the batiks and solids then, across the
room, I saw it…the modern fabric section.
I spotted the Kaffe Fassett fabrics and then next to that, the entire
Elizabeth line, in all the colorways! I
was so excited, I think I squealed a little and scared my husband. I rushed over and started pulling them out
and thinking…which ones and how much?
Even when I don’t have to, I make it a point to set a money limit for
myself. This keeps my budget right and
my stash in line. I try to only buy
fabric that has in immediate purpose and not just because I like it (of course
there are always exceptions to every rule).
These plans proved to be harder than usual on this particular day. I
ended up choosing 3 yards of this:<o:p></o:p></div>

Being a big history buff as well as fabric collector, something about
this face spoke to me. I didn’t have a

I make a cup of tea and wait for the kids to go to bed and
while the man watches TV, I tune it out and flip through the pages one at a
time. Sometimes I am lucky and there is
lots of inspiration to be found on one issue, sometimes I am not and I simply
toss the magazine on the floor next to the bed to be added to the stack of
stuff to be donated to the Quilt Guild’s rummage sale donations. This particular magazine was loaded with
ideas of quilts to be made but there was one pattern in particular that jumped
out and screamed “this is where Elizabeth needs to live!” The pattern was called ‘Fresh Fleurs’. The pattern is a modern take on a traditional
log cabin block with a focus fabric in the center and large logs that go around
and create the look of mitered boxes. <o:p></o:p><br />

There were a couple of different layout options, none of
which I was too crazy about. I opted to
use fabrics from my stash to compliment the purples and oranges in the motif,
there was even a fabric that I have been sitting on for years that worked great
for the border. I made a few blocks and
played with the layout, then decided that I wanted more color so made a few
more blocks with the center fabric framed with orange and played with the
layout some more. Finally the finished
plan could be seen, a few more blocks needed to be put together to finish that
plan and this was the end result.<o:p></o:p></div>

Quilting this one was lots of fun! I wanted to keep the modern feel but pay homage
to the classiness that was Queen Elizabeth.
I opted for a pattern with feathers and a sort of lacy feel. Overall, I
am pretty happy with the end result.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
A couple of years ago, my parents were here for a visit. My mom was flipping though a stack of my quilting magazines and spotted a quilt that was an ad for something (I don't remember what).She obviously wanted it. ;)<br />
<br />
I took her on a field trip to my favorite local quilt shop and asked her to pick out one fabric that she really loved. She did that, then I picked out a few fabrics that went well with that. We brought it all home and I rummaged through my stash to find a few more fabrics to finish off the design.<br />
<br />
It was one of those patterns with lots of waste. You know the kind here you sew a diagonal seam and then trim off the excess fabric? I hate waste! I am one of those people that is on a mission to have a waste free home. I also reuse or find a purpose for just about everything in my studio. I have 9 boxes of string fabrics sorted by color. I keep 3 different sets of boxes for various size scraps. Even the tiny bits of fabric that should go in the trash, I save and fill up trash bags then donate that to the local shelter that makes pillows for the homeless. That being said, I don't like 'goose poop' (those left over triangles from making flying geese). When I know that a pattern will create lots of waste from cutting these diagonal seams, I will simple sew a second seam 1/2 inch away from the first, trim the block and viola, I have a whole set of half square triangles to play with. This is what I did with my mom's quilt and this was the result:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J8BWwBmWZ5c/Vri0JKdMG3I/AAAAAAAKfHk/jMFqU6DG1OU/s1600/DSCF2754.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J8BWwBmWZ5c/Vri0JKdMG3I/AAAAAAAKfHk/jMFqU6DG1OU/s320/DSCF2754.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cWOA0EPq0bo/Vri0ILKy5VI/AAAAAAAKfHc/pAkvaHy3SuQ/s1600/DSCF2753.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cWOA0EPq0bo/Vri0ILKy5VI/AAAAAAAKfHc/pAkvaHy3SuQ/s320/DSCF2753.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Lots and lots of jewel tone and Asian themed fabrics, I would be crazy to throw away this beautiful mess right? I am pretty sure my need not to waste things was inherited from my Grandmother. This is a picture of here taken a few months ago with my brother.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AVFgP1tsfP0/Vri3Z_K38qI/AAAAAAAKfHw/xFu4tPTEH7Y/s1600/12047184_10207684946503289_1189058684645976127_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AVFgP1tsfP0/Vri3Z_K38qI/AAAAAAAKfHw/xFu4tPTEH7Y/s320/12047184_10207684946503289_1189058684645976127_n.jpg" width="156" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
She is my Mom's Mom and was born in 1933 in England, some quick math and basic knowledge of history will tell you that as a child she survived the German Blitzkrieg. She came away from that with few things and little education (who has time to worry about little girl's education with a war on). Even though things turned out all right for her, she met and married an American serviceman in 1953, traveled the world and settled in Las Vegas in the early 70s where they finished raising their 5 children. She has always been frugal and well a nervous person. She doesn't like to have things that don't serve a purpose and decorating has never really been her thing. When I asked her if she would like a quilt, she just sort of shruged and said 'I have plenty of blankets'. <br />
<br />
While I was trying to decide what to do with the left over bits, Grammy (as the grand kids always called her) popped into my head. I thought 'she won't tell me what she wants but this is what she is going to get'. I mean what kind of quilter doesn't make a quilt for their grandmother, right? The sort of trip around the world look with half square triangles has always appealed to me, I just never had an opportunity to make one. With all of the blocks sharing the same cream on cream print, the pattern came together quickly. I had to make about 100 extra blocks to get it to the size that I liked. That also used up most of the left over fabric from my mom's quilt too. I am always happy when I DON'T add more scraps to my collection. This was the end result of all that:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zEtvTLS4Kxw/VUAyrqbiwNI/AAAAAAAKdj8/WVo0lvYFgww/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zEtvTLS4Kxw/VUAyrqbiwNI/AAAAAAAKdj8/WVo0lvYFgww/s400/014.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
I opted for an allover quilting motif with dragonflies in a cream colored thread. She not only likes the quilt, my mom says she uses it on her bed everyday. Being the worried person that she is, she tends to save things for special occasions. That means that most of the things she cherishes don't see the light of day very much. I hope that she gets many more years out of this quilt, it is one of my favorites!<br />

Do you all remember by 'sister' <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2418942142233465728#editor/target=post;postID=2774143456674245763;onPublishedMenu=posts;onClosedMenu=posts;postNum=62;src=postname">Tianna</a>? This is a post about the quilt that I made for her parents. We were trying to think of something great for their 40th wedding anniversary. A quilt was the obvious choice. She left the design up to me but mom was specific about wanting blue. I knew this was going to be the input she would have because the the I remember most about their house when I was young was that everything was blue! LOL </div>

There was a great pattern called China Girl by Fons and Porter. Of course it was pink and as I have said before, pink is not my favorite. I could easily see it in green and blue, I often say that I learn something from every quilt I make. The think I learned from this quilt is that I don't like using templates. I do however love the result. </div>

I love all animals but if I had to choose a label, I am a self-proclaimed cat-person. That’s not to say that I don’t like dogs just if I had my pick, it would be cats every time…until I met Petey that is. He was the purest soul I ever met. He was always happy and the embodiment of the words ‘social butterfly’. He hated being confined to the house. As soon as Carrie would leave for work, Petey would go on a walkabout around the neighborhood. His first stop… my studio door. He would look in the window to see if Doodle was around. If the cat happened to be on the front porch, the boys would play a little while before Petey would come back to the door and patiently wait until I let him in, when the weather was nice, I would just leave the door open so he could come and go as he pleased. First, he would check to see if the kids were home…he checked each room of the house. If they happened to be on the couch or still in bed, he would cuddle with anyone that would let him. If the kids weren’t home, he could check to see if there were any morsels left around the kitchen table or floor. Once his perusal of the house was done, he could come back in my studio and hang with me for a while, usually right under my sewing table by my feet, napping in the sun if possible. Once he decided that he has spent enough time with me, he would get up and stand next to wherever I was with the most adorable grin. He knew that I kept treats in my desk. He also knew I would only give him one. He got his treat, a few ear scratches and went on about his business. I am not sure how many people he would visit but I can honestly say that our little routine was one of the highlights of my day. Many days he would return after the kids got home from school but his routine was different in the afternoons and didn’t involve the quiet time exchange. I miss those times.<o:p></o:p></div>

Carrie was involved in a rather serious car accident late one evening while on her way to visit her sister in Ohio. She sustained only minor injuries but Petey was not so fortunate. He died at the scene of the accident. Carrie was devastated. It was also the first time that my kids had experienced the loss of a loved one. I know that he was a dog and not even our dog but my kids loved him and he loved them. We had a little memorial service for him and the kids all got to say goodbye word and tossing some of his favorite treats in the grave with him. A beautiful Crepe Myrtle is growing atop of him now. <o:p></o:p></div>

Before we even buried him, Carrie’s sister Angie and our friend Lisa asked me about making a quilt in memory of Petey since Carrie was planning to bury him in his favorite quilt. I was happy to start planning something. I went through my stash of pictures that I had of him which were surprisingly ample considering that again, he wasn’t my dog. The other two ladies also emailed me pictures that they had of him as well of her and both of them together. There was a pattern in the Fons and Porter magazine that month that had a nice space in it to put pictures. It was therapeutic to edit and work with the pictures and see his sweet little face while I was making the quilt.<o:p></o:p></div>

As it always happens, it takes time to get something like this completed, especially with life getting in the way. It took me right about a year to get this gift finished. As luck would have it, right about the time that the quilt was ready, Carrie moved into a new house. It made a great housewarming gift. While I miss having both of them as neighbors, I am overjoyed for Carrie as her life has progressed and changed since she lost Petey. I hope that this quilt brings her happy memories of her boy. </div>

This is my buddy Matt and his lovely bride Elny. They got married on a beautiful day last
September. In honor this momentous
event, I made them a quilt. Elny LOVES
pink…Matt, not so much. The colors they
agreed upon for their special day were a lovely shade of fuchsia and a
complementary green shade that I can only describe as chartreuse. Personally, I agree with Matt and pink is not
my personal favorite color in the world, but again, I agree with the sentiment
of ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life’ and suggested that he leave her alone about it. I opted to use the colors of the wedding in
the quilt, since I didn’t know Elny all that well, I figured at least that way
I knew she would like the colors. The
pattern, however, I chose because I thought the design would speak to Matt’s
need for design and order. He likes
things to be precise and this pattern has long, clean lines and a pronounced
contrast in color values. <br />

I started pulling some fabric from my stash. The green for example is a fabric I bought
for <span style="color: red;">Petey’s </span>quilt but it just didn’t work
there. I simply love this fabric
though. It is the shade of green that
makes you think of sitting in a lush forest after the rain has stopped. The floral pattern is highlighted in gold the
color of sunlight glinting through wet leaves.
I worked around the green and tried to find a pink that was the right
shade and that spoke to me. Again, pink
is not my thing and this stumped me for a while. I decided to pack up the fabrics I had and
take a trip to <span style="color: red;"><a href="http://www.ashevillecottonco.com/">Asheville Cotton Company</a> </span>and see what we could find. My buddy <span style="color: red;"><a href="http://dreamsofsewingmachines.com/">Michie </a></span>helped
me out and we found the perfect pink to tie all of the other colors
together. Then we found a couple other complementary
colors to finish it all. <o:p></o:p></div>

I made a quilt for him
when we were dating but didn’t really love it…it is now the quilt that lays on
the couch (usually under the dog in fact).
Anyway, he deserved a real quilt!
A few years ago, the <span style="color: red;"><a href="http://www.northcott.net/?layout=1col&content=fabric&fabid=17">Stonehenge </a></span>fabric
line came out. Along with that fabric,
there were a number of quilt patterns that were designed to complement this
particular fabric. Every time I saw this
pattern in a magazine advertisement, he would say ‘Oh, I like that one!’. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hfrapuSWu3A/VLQGC4wwleI/AAAAAAAKZuE/LkUBYmfSQY8/s1600/96038_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hfrapuSWu3A/VLQGC4wwleI/AAAAAAAKZuE/LkUBYmfSQY8/s1600/96038_1.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
After about the sixth time of hearing the
Ooooo-ing, I got the hint. A couple of
months later, we were at the <span style="color: red;"><a href="http://www.ashevillequiltguild.org/show.html">Asheville Quilt Show</a>. </span> The is a <a href="http://www.hwfabrics.com/">vendor </a>there every year that carries
a great array of fabric that always speaks to me. Well, this particular year, they happened to
have not only the pattern of the quilt he liked, but also all of the fabric to
make it with. He picked out all of the
fabric to go in HIS quilt. I can
honestly say that I only suggested changing one of the fabrics so that there
would be more contrast and the pattern would show up better. Mind you, he is married to a quilter but his
color theory is somewhat lacking. That
being said, I think he did an amazing job picking the colors, don't you? Now, I tend to be
a bargain shopper and rarely buy most things (including fabric) at full
price. I do think that this is the ONLY
quilt that I have every bought all the fabric, not only at once but NOT on
sale. This puppy is not only king size but big
enough to drop all the way down the sides of our California King Size bed to
the bottom of the rails. The finished
size is 124” square. It is the largest
quilt I have ever put on my Gammill.<br />

<br />
When it came time to quilt it, I thought ‘Yippie, I get to do some super fun custom quilting on this one!’ But alas, my man has simple taste, I tried to steer him toward some detailed quilting but he would have none of that. He says ‘can you do all over feathers?’ Seriously?? This could have been SOOO detailed! But it is his quilt so he gets what he wants. He picked a very neural (read taupe) color of thread and an all over loose feather pattern.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tfv4HqcMgmc/UwaRt4mao1I/AAAAAAAAA8E/wYUGJLdp_x4/s1600/068.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tfv4HqcMgmc/UwaRt4mao1I/AAAAAAAAA8E/wYUGJLdp_x4/s1600/068.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So this story has an interesting (if long-winded) start…<br />
<br />
I have been on a mission for the last couple of years to make scrap quilts, or at least use as much of my stash as possible before buying more. As all you quilters know…NOT buying fabric really goes against our grain. However, being sustainable is my new mission in life and keeping thing simple is a cornerstone of that philosophy.<br />
<br />
So I saw a picture of a very simple pinwheel quilt and thought ‘Ooo, I would only have to pick up some white fabric and that would be fun”. It wasn’t something that I had to figure out a lot of math or layouts. It was just going to be an easy, no-brainer project that would be an easy one to come down from after the one I had just finished. I changed the plan for the borders and some and whipped up a bunch of blocks. It was that sort of sew until you thing you have enough method that works so well for these types of projects. Being the over-achiever that I am, it turned out I had enough blocks to make 2 quilt tops. I still to this day have only quilted one of them. I have never made the same quilt twice before this either. There are just SO many that I want to make that I never think about doing the same one again. You can see those <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2418942142233465728#editor/target=post;postID=4507037715493330213;onPublishedMenu=posts;onClosedMenu=posts;postNum=18;src=postname">here</a>.<br />
<br />
The one I DID quilt was pretty cute and it was the only quilt that I had at the time that seemed nice enough to put in our quilt guild’s annual quilt show. That was 2 summers ago. Anyway, a very nice woman saw that quilt on display and inquired about buying it. I was pretty surprised as, truth be told, it was not my favorite quilt. She really liked it though and so I gave her a price, she said great, call you tomorrow to work out picking it up. Tomorrow came and she asked if it would be possible to have a quilt just like the one in the show but in a King size bed quilt. Now it is already a HUGE compliment when someone likes your art enough to pay for it but when they ask for something to be made special for them, it’s like a big sloppy kiss!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So I set out to make the quilt she asked for. When it was done, she was quite pleased. She bought it and took it home.<br />
<br />
So I still had the quilt that had hung in the show. I decided that maybe, since she liked it enough to buy it, maybe someone else would too. I listed it for sale on <a href="http://www.quiltsforsale.ca/DB/search/quilter.php?page=1&ArtistID=257">Quilts for Sale</a> and what would you know…a collector bought it. That was kind of a big complement too because it was purchased by someone that KNOWS quilts. It wasn’t someone that just appreciates them as ‘pretty blankets’ or says ‘oh, I like it because it’s pink’. <br />
<br />
So now I have made this quilt 3 times and sold 2 of them, you can imagine my surprise at all of these developments over a quilt that I personally wasn’t in love with. Mind you, the pattern is really starting to grow on me. ;) I was completely blown over when I received an email inquiring about the quilt that had already been sold on the QFS website. See, even once you sell a quilt there, the photos stay up so people can see what your style is and commissions are arranged through the site. Yet another very nice woman asked me to make this quilt yet again, this time for a twin size bed. We discussed pricing and color details and whatnot. The fun thing this time was, she wanted 2 additional quilts that were similar in style but not exactly the same. Her only real requests were that the main color was to be blue in all three and that she would like them to have varying borders. So I set out to buy some fabrics (yes, I needed to even with my impressive scrap stash) and start to the washing, cutting, sewing and pressing routine. I made the pinwheel blocks first since I have had so much practice at them. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I started scouring the internet for inspiration for the other 2 complementing ‘sisters’. I narrowed it down to about 6 options and then sent them off to their soon to be owner for input. She picked out the two she liked best and I ran from there. Of course I just used those as inspiration as I was using my own scrappy bag of fabrics and making them to fit her beds. I used the same fabrics in all the quilts. The pinwheel quilt has fewer fabrics in it than the other 2 and now I have enough of those left over blocks to make the quilt all over again…that will be another story I am sure. There is a total of 130 different fabrics is each of the star and square quilts. </div>

<br />
So it took me a couple of months to get the tops made. Then came the fun part of deciding the borders, they are all blue but vary a lot. My style tends to be fairly traditional piecing but the colors and quilting style tends to lean toward the modern movement. So these borders are very old school. One is a checkerboard, one is a piano key and the last one is a sawtooth. I simply love pieced borders; I think they make the quilt into something entirely different. Obviously the quilting is unique.<br />

Anyway, here are the ladies…I had a great time quilting them, it was very time consuming but I think the result was worth it. I truly hope that they find themselves in a great home where they will be loved and will keep others warm in return. <br />

<br />
This quilt started out as a 'what should I do next once I finished my last string quilt. It is my favorite quilt I have eve made but it did sort of take a lot out of me. I needed an easy one this time. I found this picture in a McCalls quilting magazine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-edwntc0LYrs/Uwaiy9Ft3eI/AAAAAAAAA_M/BUOjWcsTxwU/s1600/Summer_at_moms_Large.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-edwntc0LYrs/Uwaiy9Ft3eI/AAAAAAAAA_M/BUOjWcsTxwU/s1600/Summer_at_moms_Large.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved the simplicity of the pinwheels but applique is just not my thing so I ditched that. I also tweaked the saw tooth border to be slightly more interesting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kcUkq6e7uEw/UwadspajzmI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/R-FWIZunDZQ/s1600/602.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kcUkq6e7uEw/UwadspajzmI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/R-FWIZunDZQ/s1600/602.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wh-xfjD7B-M/UwaeNVv53EI/AAAAAAAAA88/9gSGywcc8j0/s1600/332.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wh-xfjD7B-M/UwaeNVv53EI/AAAAAAAAA88/9gSGywcc8j0/s1600/332.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I opted for a modern twist in the borders where the flower applique was in the pattern.<br />

This backing fabric was sitting in my stash and I thought it balanced the front quite well.<br />

I am soooooo far behind that I may never be able keep up. I have a considerable amount of empathy for the hamster I had as a child these days. I have been brain-storming and designing teacher gifts (ahead of time for once) with the kids lately. I then realized I never even posted about LAST years teacher gifts! What a slacker I am! I mean really, what DO I do with my time??? So, in an effort to be frugal about this post, they are all going here. This is going to be longer than most of my posts but hang in there, it will be mostly pictures. :)<br />
<br />
First Up, Mrs. Ferguson's Laptop Case:<br />
<br />
This is my youngest boy's first grade teachers. She was one of those great southern ladies that always had a big smile for you and kind work to say. My biggest memory of her is going in for a parent-teacher conference and talking about his improvement and behavior in class. We chatted a bit about his English grade and what not. Then she pulls out a folder with his math work in it. She says, and I quote "Oh LORD, baby Jesus! What ever can I say about Jordan and his math work!" Now you have to hear that said like Julia Sugarbaker and the appropriate head toss and accent. It was beautiful! Now don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad thing, it was actually a good thing. See, my boy is something of a math wiz, he was doing multiplication (for fun) before starting Kindergarten. He may be the key to my retirement!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mIMJnKGqfnU/URPFlJLZPpI/AAAAAAAAAv0/yXw5IhcfKHE/s1600/039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mIMJnKGqfnU/URPFlJLZPpI/AAAAAAAAAv0/yXw5IhcfKHE/s320/039.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next Up, Mrs. Mayo's purse:<br />
<br />
This is my daughter's second grade teacher. She also is a sweet woman who really showed her interest in Isabel. She was the first teacher she had that believed me that she was struggling to understand what she was learning and and suggested that we get her some medication to help her. She made a complete turn around in the 2nd grade and yesterday brought home a certificate for A-B Honor roll! Anyway, Isabel saw me making one of these bags and asked if we could make one for her teacher. She found all the fabrics and helped me put it together. She kept saying 'It NEEDS to have butterflies and it has to be blue!"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HU0erf7e37E/URPFpdNnGwI/AAAAAAAAAv8/sv0-kr6j9qw/s1600/037.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HU0erf7e37E/URPFpdNnGwI/AAAAAAAAAv8/sv0-kr6j9qw/s320/037.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up, Mrs. Ferguson's Tree Wall Hanging:<br />
<br />
My other daughter was in 5th grade last year. It was her first year of having more than one teacher. She LOVED her science teacher. She was one of those people for her that really helped her see the world in a new way. She is a self proclaimed tree-hugger! Aubrey and I decided early in the school year that whatever her gift was, it would have to be a tree! So we opted to make a wall hanging. Aubrey took a stack of various green fabrics to school, gave them to her switch class teacher and asked if all the kids would sign a piece with a permanent marker. Somehow she managed to get all the kids to sign some without Mrs. Ferguson knowing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_UKzGbZXRo/URPFwViu75I/AAAAAAAAAwM/3L5SRsRL340/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_UKzGbZXRo/URPFwViu75I/AAAAAAAAAwM/3L5SRsRL340/s320/009.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then we took all of those pieces and stitched them to a lining layer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5IPOL9_1LUI/URPFuX47qDI/AAAAAAAAAwE/sfNm_uLu2Og/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5IPOL9_1LUI/URPFuX47qDI/AAAAAAAAAwE/sfNm_uLu2Og/s320/010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once they were stitched down, we cut them out and turned them right way out. and started playing with the placement of them on a 'tree'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EFEJL3jP9gA/URPFyIVxhKI/AAAAAAAAAwU/kpNynkSHiJA/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EFEJL3jP9gA/URPFyIVxhKI/AAAAAAAAAwU/kpNynkSHiJA/s320/011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This is what the tree looked like with it was naked. I simply fused some batik fabric down on a dark and sparkly background. It looks kind of sad this way doesn't it?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VCnoZzaP0IM/URPF5xH6VZI/AAAAAAAAAwk/KiPXRBhV4dM/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VCnoZzaP0IM/URPF5xH6VZI/AAAAAAAAAwk/KiPXRBhV4dM/s320/012.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
We, added the leaves by quilting them onto the tree and this was the end result.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZM67m3hlokg/URPF6z3mz1I/AAAAAAAAAww/6hK-ZtDlIuI/s1600/064.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZM67m3hlokg/URPF6z3mz1I/AAAAAAAAAww/6hK-ZtDlIuI/s400/064.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I think she liked it. ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MklPfgAOTp8/URPF6b9y-UI/AAAAAAAAAws/sDdsWg8UZrE/s1600/061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MklPfgAOTp8/URPF6b9y-UI/AAAAAAAAAws/sDdsWg8UZrE/s320/061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh and a side note, this is a picture of Aubrey getting a prize for being voted 'most likely to be elected president' by her classmates. The fact that we are politically neutral made this an funny moment. The irony was not lost on her teacher.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4z6mOQYl6iQ/URPF08OC8tI/AAAAAAAAAwc/ZzE4955zBGA/s1600/059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4z6mOQYl6iQ/URPF08OC8tI/AAAAAAAAAwc/ZzE4955zBGA/s320/059.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up, Mrs Borland's Computer Bag.<br />
<br />
Aubrey had a harder time deciding what to make for her math teacher. She is not nearly as open about things as Mrs. Ferguson. So we did some spying and asked her other teacher for some hints. We got a list of things that she was interested in. One of those things was gardening and that she liked the color purple. So, we opted for a purple flower set into a computer case like the one I had made for Jordan's teacher. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ExU079HhPRg/URPGBYSIPcI/AAAAAAAAAxE/qoFqafWFzl8/s1600/054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ExU079HhPRg/URPGBYSIPcI/AAAAAAAAAxE/qoFqafWFzl8/s320/054.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Did I mention that she had recently survived cancer? Aubrey always has to find a way to ad some sparkle to things so we found this blingy survivor ribbon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KPQQ8dYN540/URPGD9UbTnI/AAAAAAAAAxM/Y9G87kpnybQ/s1600/055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KPQQ8dYN540/URPGD9UbTnI/AAAAAAAAAxM/Y9G87kpnybQ/s320/055.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We lined the inside with the same fabric that was the background on Mrs. Ferguson's quilt. Bags always look best with striped handles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bI5FaOtC0oU/URPGGPJGS6I/AAAAAAAAAxU/iT9GdQXfF8w/s1600/056.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bI5FaOtC0oU/URPGGPJGS6I/AAAAAAAAAxU/iT9GdQXfF8w/s320/056.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I think she liked it too:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TYDy5iTE4hM/URPF_XZtSpI/AAAAAAAAAw8/H42n0V_1vUA/s1600/062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TYDy5iTE4hM/URPF_XZtSpI/AAAAAAAAAw8/H42n0V_1vUA/s320/062.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Last Up are the big boys' teachers, aren't my boys handsome?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QnFTjSPGnk4/URPGSotmWsI/AAAAAAAAAx8/UPmIBQXJDHU/s1600/069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QnFTjSPGnk4/URPGSotmWsI/AAAAAAAAAx8/UPmIBQXJDHU/s320/069.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I had the great experience of going to a Ricky Tim's seminar about a year ago. ONE of the things that I knew I would have to make was a Convergence Quilt. It would be the perfect gift for a math teacher, no? Too bad Mr. Thomspon was their English teacher, LOL. He was one of those teachers that really stood out though, especially with Jaydin. He loves to read and Mr. Thompson really opened his mind to new books and ideas, not only that but ideas that were positive and up-building. I knew that he would need a special gift early on in the year. I showed the boys a picture of this style of quilt and they liked the idea. I used two pieces of hand dyed fabric and started cutting. I liked it when the middle was done but it just needed something...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DBH9IY56HHs/URPMkjGPTPI/AAAAAAAAAzI/ovWsdqEOj_s/s1600/072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DBH9IY56HHs/URPMkjGPTPI/AAAAAAAAAzI/ovWsdqEOj_s/s320/072.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I had a few random scraps left over and just started laying them around. I ended up with this very sort of futuristic deal going on. I was very happy with how this came out in the end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8sz1pxBDY-M/URPGMk7cGAI/AAAAAAAAAxs/sQMSZolx-_M/s1600/049.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8sz1pxBDY-M/URPGMk7cGAI/AAAAAAAAAxs/sQMSZolx-_M/s320/049.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
They were very happy to give it to him<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fEnM7TbKmZI/URPGYTrzReI/AAAAAAAAAyM/KfeuZn8D1Fg/s1600/072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fEnM7TbKmZI/URPGYTrzReI/AAAAAAAAAyM/KfeuZn8D1Fg/s320/072.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Last but not least, Mrs. Tomberlin who was in fact their math teacher. The boys discovered the awesomeness of Pi last year. What would be cooler for a math teacher than a computer bag with the Pi symbol on it? Yeah, I couldn't think of anything either. She always challenged the boys to excel and I appreciate any teacher that goes that extra little bit to make them think!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Well there they are, all 7 of them! That is a lot of teachers! This year there are 12 of them!! Needless to say, I need to get to work!!<br />
<br />
I hope that all my kids teachers know that they are appreciated and thought of as part of our family structure. That is why we do this every year!<br />

This was so much fun the<a href="http://fivemonkeyquilts.blogspot.com/search/label/Giveaways"> last time</a> I did it, I have been looking to do a Blog Hop again. So this time, the universal quilter organizer, <a href="http://quiltinggallery.com/quilters-fun/quilters-blog-hop-party/">Michele</a> asked if I wanted to play at her party, I <strike>jumped </strike> {waited until the last day to get} on board. So, without further ado...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I gave away a bottle of my Magic Starch last time, I will be giving away a bottle of her sister Super Quilt Soap. I also make this soap and I use it on all my fabric as well as my quilts. It is available for purchase to my customers and hopefully will soon be up for grabs at a local quilt shop. I use up-cycled glass bottles and it has a super yummy smell.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a picture of my 'Vanna ' posing with the bottle and a quilt that now smells so very nice. ;)</div>

Just leave a post for me with your favorite soap scent to be entered in the drawing (the soap only has one scent - I call it Lavender Rain). Also, like us on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/5LittleMonkeysQuilting?ref=hl">Facebook </a>for a second chance to win. Included with your fancy schmancy bottle of homemade soap I will also include a $25 gift certificate toward longarm quilting service by yours truly. It can be used on any quilt size or pattern and will be deducted before any other promotions (I also give first quilt and referral discounts). Batting, thread and shipping are not included in the discount and there is a $50 minimum charge on all quilting orders. I will ship internationally if you win.<br />

<br />
This is my cousin Rick and his GORGEOUS wife Katrina. They are 2 of my most favoritest people in the whole wide world! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AukKUGXrV-0/ULTCQj_lCYI/AAAAAAAAAtg/XCNtb0FpQNY/s1600/416843_3241553003937_241855636_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AukKUGXrV-0/ULTCQj_lCYI/AAAAAAAAAtg/XCNtb0FpQNY/s320/416843_3241553003937_241855636_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
They have been locked in a blissful marriage for going on 18 years.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v9Xgvbi_V9o/ULTCPGi3PcI/AAAAAAAAAtY/xY3fjlrfSE4/s1600/221781_2045474502722_2484473_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v9Xgvbi_V9o/ULTCPGi3PcI/AAAAAAAAAtY/xY3fjlrfSE4/s1600/221781_2045474502722_2484473_n.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This is what they looked like on the day they committed to keep each other for good.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9JMjrPGzfaA/ULTCNWWbdrI/AAAAAAAAAtI/Fk-VIUqPkeM/s1600/155424_4026184419232_139377371_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9JMjrPGzfaA/ULTCNWWbdrI/AAAAAAAAAtI/Fk-VIUqPkeM/s320/155424_4026184419232_139377371_n.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
The look like Ken and Barbie don't they? As beautiful as they are, it kind of makes you want to dress them up and build them a dream house and buy then an ugly pink car doesn't it? The great part is, they still look at each other like this all the time...it makes me very happy! <br />
<br />
Here are a few examples of the things that this experiment is joy has produced:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iaP89BPizaI/ULTCOOJbRXI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/P5yexijjT-M/s1600/215235_1976675462789_4322157_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iaP89BPizaI/ULTCOOJbRXI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/P5yexijjT-M/s1600/215235_1976675462789_4322157_n.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
They make good looking new people too don't they? <br />
<br />
Anyway, I decided that since it had been a while since I had done something to celebrate them and their marriage it was time to make them a quilt, I mean they earned it didn't they? Let me preface this with saying, I wouldn't make a quilt like this for just anyone...this one had a lot of work in it! Not so much the piecing but the quilting is some of my favorite work yet.<br />
<br />
When Lee over at <a href="http://freshlypieced.blogspot.com/">freshly pieced</a> started this great <a href="http://freshlypieced.blogspot.com/2011/03/supernova-quilt-along-join-me.html">quilt along</a> I knew it was for me. Once I started picking out the fabrics for it, I knew it would be the one for them. See, Trina is one of those people that literally brings color into a room. Not in the 'she dresses like a clown' kind of way, but in the 'here comes the sun' kind of way. Rick is great too but more in a wonder-nerd kind of way, and everyone knows how I love a good nerd! So the combinations of bright happy colors mixed with the 'Supernova' pattern was perfect! <br />
<br />
So, here goes, pictures of the finished quilt:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
And that great, rainbow colored freaky fabric is the borders, backing and binding! I just love the stuff but if you look at it too long, I think it might induce seizures. I had picked that little jewel up off the clearance table at <a href="http://www.ashevillecottonco.com/">ACC</a> a few years back with NO idea where it was going to live but I just knew I had to have it! I am so happy that this is the forever home it found. I also pray that these two wonderful people have many years of happy dreams while lying under it! <br />
<br />
Happy Anniversary! I love you both very much!<br />

<span style="text-align: left;">I know I haven't been around much lately, just too much life and not enough time. I plan to make a bunch of posts this week so hang on to your socks....</span></div>
<br />
This is my girl, I call her 'Mo'. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fSruvAhw0k0/ULNqc671iXI/AAAAAAAAArc/l4DR_MpquP4/s1600/001+(5).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fSruvAhw0k0/ULNqc671iXI/AAAAAAAAArc/l4DR_MpquP4/s320/001+(5).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">By 'my girl' I mean she is my clone for the good and the bad. {As much as I try to improve on my good, I am not delusional to think that the bad doesn't balance that scale.} I am fortunate enough that the quilting bug bit her when she was 9. She may not be as eager of a quilter as I am but she will be. It took her 2 years to finish her first quilt, but as with most things, she did it all the way. She didn't take the easy route and pick out a panel to dress up. No, she didn't even find a pattern in the giant stack of magazines and ideas I have been clipping for years. She sat down with a piece of paper and drew a block. Then I gave her a piece of graph paper and said 'ok, now put it on here so you can make sure it works'. She whipped that out with no problem too. She doesn't have it in her to say "I can't do that". </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a picture of the compete block that she designed:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TGUoOSRNcHQ/ULNoiUCyXYI/AAAAAAAAArE/kqaCZrVaaOU/s1600/060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TGUoOSRNcHQ/ULNoiUCyXYI/AAAAAAAAArE/kqaCZrVaaOU/s320/060.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This whole making a quilt thing started when she was rummaging through some scraps one day looking for some other project for school. She found a bunch of left over 3 inch squares I had cut to make <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2418942142233465728#editor/target=post;postID=8213695259229552915">this</a> quilt. Red is my signature color so I always have lots of that laying around and what goes better with red than black and white right? It didn't take long for her to collect enough fabric to make a lap quilt. True to form, she didn't want much help, she wanted to figure it out on her own. This particular personality trait, I find to be especially endearing. ;) Once she figured that part out, it became a long and drawn out process of distraction. This personality trait...not my favorite. However, like I said, she is my clone so I can't complain too much...I have quilts that are 5 years in the making. Anyway, those blocks turned into this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uTNSW2JMDDo/ULNoQ9FiT3I/AAAAAAAAAq4/RzNFWC4gmqk/s1600/059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uTNSW2JMDDo/ULNoQ9FiT3I/AAAAAAAAAq4/RzNFWC4gmqk/s320/059.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again, this is the stage it sat in for quite a while. While on a shopping trip to one of my favorite quilt stores (which sadly turned out to be my last trip there because it closed down) I found the perfect border and backing fabrics. When I brought them home and showed them to her, she was once again excited about finishing the quilt. We put the borders on that weekend. It is amazing to see how much her sewing skills have developed, I am sure it is simply an age thing and that whole 'doing it right the first time' thing is starting to kick in (again, good trait). I am proud to say that even though the seams in the center are not perfect, the borders are, look how flat they lay! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4SUo81OBRRc/ULNoqvio1rI/AAAAAAAAArM/Ant8Qg1KD4M/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4SUo81OBRRc/ULNoqvio1rI/AAAAAAAAArM/Ant8Qg1KD4M/s320/photo.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Didn't I tell you the fabric for the borders was perfect? ;) The same black and white hearts that is in the outer border is on the back and the black polka dot is the binding.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax0HJEgswTA/ULNn8-xcNzI/AAAAAAAAAqg/abyaFLnsm7w/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax0HJEgswTA/ULNn8-xcNzI/AAAAAAAAAqg/abyaFLnsm7w/s320/007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGVBDcF2LPA/ULNn-pwWUdI/AAAAAAAAAqo/Z2iYRx4ptbs/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGVBDcF2LPA/ULNn-pwWUdI/AAAAAAAAAqo/Z2iYRx4ptbs/s320/008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She even tried her hand at the quilting. I helped her lay out her pattern and load the quilt on the rack but she did the quilting. She also did all the binding herself. I made the hanging sleeve but she attached it along with the label. Her final motivation to finish was to put it in our <a href="http://www.ashevillequiltguild.org/">quilt show</a>, which she did. All the junior quilters that put a quilt in the show get a ribbon so she was proud of that. After the show was over, she entered it in the county fair where she won a 2nd place ribbon in her category...she is even more proud of that one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YzV25J4nSaA/ULNwpxqvSCI/AAAAAAAAArw/6IDYUyI7I1I/s1600/county+fair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YzV25J4nSaA/ULNwpxqvSCI/AAAAAAAAArw/6IDYUyI7I1I/s320/county+fair.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that's my girl, ain't she somethin'? </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have this family tradition where for one day of the year, the kids each get to choose what they want to do for the day. We put all the months, except for the really cold ones (December-February) and August since that is when our anniversary is, into a hat. They each pulled a month out of the hat, whichever month they picked was their month. On the first Saturday of that month is their day. June is Jaydin's day. He opted to have funnel cakes for breakfast then go <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/">Geocashing</a> with the family. Then it was lunch at <a href="http://www.jerusalemgardencafe.com/">Jerusalem Garden</a> and back home to drop off the smaller kids and Dad. After that, I took him and Damian along with another friend to the skate park where I watched them try not to break their necks. Once they were good and messy from that, we came home and watched a movie. Needless to say, Mom was tired! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As part of their 'special day' we, the parents, surprise them with a gift. Jaydin is a huge book hound, he also has thing about documenting everything so there are notes all over the place. He really wanted some sort of e-reader. After reading reviews on which one would be the best for someone his age, I got him a Kindle. He was delighted to say the least. Since he is after all a 12 year old boy, I didn't want him using it much before it had some sort of protection on it. Dad took him to my favorite fabric store to pick out two fat quarters. He brought home a red Lorax fabric with a complimenting blue and white fabric. I found a <a href="http://whipstitchfabrics.com/blog/kindle-cover-tutorial/">tutorial</a> to make a cover. I think it came out pretty cute...</div>

This was a fun one to make. About a year ago I found the pattern in one magazine or another (don't really remember which one). <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_d8VQyl65V8/T-h36wuWs0I/AAAAAAAAApE/YUHUgX2oKUo/s1600/020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />

We had spent a fun weekend at their house last summer after not seeing them for many years. It was great to remember how much I love them both. Even though they are friends they really are family {in a rather twisted way}. I have a list of people in my life that 'need quilts' and once we had found out that we would be visiting their house, I added them to my list. So even before I got to see them, I started pulling out fabrics for this quilt. I thought Liz would like something sort of traditional but still bright and funky...you know like me! ;) Since I am a batik hound I didn't have to go far...I have to say this was a pretty fun to put together.<br />

I have been trying to work in pieced backing lately. Since I had bits of the triangle pieces leftover from the front, I found a somewhat strange way to put them together for a strip on the back. I was hoping there would be more of the green showing once it was quilted but it didn't work out that way...oh well. I think it still worked out well.<br />

I make this starch, it is wonderful stuff! I can't claim to be the mastermind behind it because someone else gave the recipe to me. I have just embraced it with both hands and think it is sent straight from the fabric deities themselves! So, here is a 9 oz bottle of concentrated starch. You will need to add distilled water to it and put it in your favorite spray bottle. I have been making it for a while and I'm pretty sure I will never use anything else.</div>

<span lang="EN">I am not sure what happened with this post. I thought I posted it with all the other teacher gift posts from last school year, but maybe I didn’t….<br />

<br />
<span lang="EN">This is Jordan’s Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Jackson. I have to say she has been one of my favorites! I am so glad that Squish got to have his first school experiences with her. She is a true gem and good hearted person. I mean really, you have to be a certain kind of person to even WANT to be in a room of screaming 5 years olds all day, every day right? Well, she not only does it but she is good at it and gets them to really learn great things. My son will forever be a better person for having her as a chapter of his life, I am sure of it. </span></span><br />

<br />
As much as possible, I try to include the kids in whatever gifts are made for the teachers as I want the gift to be from them as much as it is a ‘thank you’ gift from me. On a shopping trip one day I had found this Mayfly Mischief fabric by Clothworks. I thought ‘Oh that is soooooo cute! I NEED to make something with that”. But since I try to not buy fabric that doesn’t have a purpose (batiks and stripes not withstanding) I resisted buying it. This was before I had met Mrs. Jackson. She is one of those ‘Dr Seuss’ type of people. Everything has a song or funny poem attached to it and I can just see her owning a Cat in the Hat style hat. That is what this fabric panel reminded me of. So I took Squish to the store with me one day and asked him if he thought she would like it. He said ‘she would LOVE it, can we make her something to put on the wall?’ Good enough for me…I bought the panel as well as enough coordinating fabrics to make something…all thought I didn’t know what yet. <br />

<br />
<br />
What possessed me to just start making half square triangles I am not sure. I HATE making them! I usually love the end results that comes from things made with them but the actual, cutting and sewing and pressing and then trimming that is required makes me cranky. But alas, that is what I did…just whipped up a bunch of them. That morphed into pinwheels, which is one of those things I just love that is sadly made up entirely of half square triangles. So that was that, now I had this big stack of pinwheels…what next? Start with the panel, add some borders, slap on the pinwheels, then some more borders and viola…a wall hanging. Then I realized that I had 2 panels and just about enough blocks to make a second one so guess what? This one has an exact twin. I saved the second one to put in our local quilt show and it ended up in our guild’s calendar. <br />

The quilting was fun too. I am sure there is more quilting than necessary on it but who cares, it is hanging on a wall right? The thread is a beautiful shimmer variegated thread that I had been looking for a home for as well. With lots of loops and more pinwheels and some accenting on the center panel. Over all I am pretty pleased with this one, I hope it finds a good home with Mrs. Jackson.<br />

This is my new cousin Sasha. Isn’t she great? She is about 3 months old in this picture and the quilt was about 2 days finished. :/ I know, I am a slacker. But in my defense I didn’t actually know she existed until a couple days after she was born. So I need to make something QUICK. I was hoping my aunt and uncle would come and visit while my parents were in town but figured if then didn’t, everyone is only a mailbox away. <br />

I rummaged through my stash and came up with this crazy cute baby girl fabric and panels. It is wonderfully silly with skinny babies in big diapers decorated with an array of baby paraphernalia. Since our family tends toward the goofy side of life, I figured it was fair to assume that this little bundle of cuteness would one day join our ranks. Therefore, the quilt is named ‘Silly Girl’. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
As I said, I started with some panels and then added fabric from a jelly roll of the same fabric line. I have had it for so long, I am not sure who the like is by. :/ I then found this great border fabric also in my stash, I thought it gave the quilt a bit of retro-funkiness. To add to that sort of psychedelic vibe, I quilted it with various daisies in a pink and yellow variegated thread. I hope she gets many years of cuddling with it and dragging it around. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XFIl9hjoOzY/TjMv6I3uODI/AAAAAAAAAkI/nCiHxptrP1U/s1600/101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XFIl9hjoOzY/TjMv6I3uODI/AAAAAAAAAkI/nCiHxptrP1U/s320/101.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is Mrs. Williams, she is the other half of my Boy's dynamic duo teacher team. In fact, she calls <a href="http://fivemonkeyquilts.blogspot.com/2011/07/mr-traceys-sudoku-quilt.html?spref=fb">Mr. Tracey</a> her 'work husband' and they are really like school parents. They are a true team. I am pretty sure she has been D's favorite teacher, she on more than one occasion showed how much she cares for him. She calls herself the Mama Duck for a number of reasons one of them is that when she walks down the hallway, all her duckings follow behind her.</div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nm_S3zF3oY0/TjMwJ7L26fI/AAAAAAAAAkM/3O8LFgWNeQ0/s1600/102.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nm_S3zF3oY0/TjMwJ7L26fI/AAAAAAAAAkM/3O8LFgWNeQ0/s320/102.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
So it was easy for the boys to choose a theme for her quilt. They didn't know what to do, just so long as it had a duck on it. I found a greeting card pattern online for a duck and then added the feet. Using scraps of fabric in shades of blue, I made a scrappy background. I couldn't decide if I wanted the duck to be fluffy or not, I tried it with batting under the yellow fabric to make it look more like a stuffed animal but I wasn't really feeling that look. So we just stuck with a bright shade of yellow and orange minkie. My original plan was to use blue dotted minkie in the border but I didn't really like that either. I ended up carrying the middle around in the car with me for like a week until I could walk into a fabric store and find borders I like. I happened to be in Black Mountain and stopped in to see Marti. I just love her shop and I wish I was in the area more often so I could have an excuse to fondle fabric in her store. Anyway...these are the borders we came up with:<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QuqAGrnC0ck/TjMwZHB3JkI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/Ss0hez6kZ5w/s1600/103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QuqAGrnC0ck/TjMwZHB3JkI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/Ss0hez6kZ5w/s320/103.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;">The quilting goes like this. The patchwork center has duck feet.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;">The duck is blanket stitched by hand.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;">There is a black filigree bead for the eye.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;">The outer border has rubber duckies (think Ernie) and daisies in the corners.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sRT7seKnXL4/TjMwoUhd3lI/AAAAAAAAAkU/m9yx1tcH3jE/s1600/106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sRT7seKnXL4/TjMwoUhd3lI/AAAAAAAAAkU/m9yx1tcH3jE/s320/106.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UWle3cJPqWA/TjMnuU_I1EI/AAAAAAAAAjs/dSTJy2Im2Eg/s1600/107.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UWle3cJPqWA/TjMnuU_I1EI/AAAAAAAAAjs/dSTJy2Im2Eg/s320/107.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
As you know I have 5 kids, all of them are in Elementary School. Yes, my house is a zoo and I am guy with ugly pants, a whip and a chair. <br />
<br />
The school that the monkeys are assigned to was designed for Kindergarten through 5th grade. A few years back the district built a sort of middle school/elementary school for the 5th and 6th grades to take some of the load from the Elementary as well as the Jr High Schools. The kids are sort of eased into the higher grades by having 2 teachers, one for English and Social Studies and another for Math and Science. The school teams up a pair of teachers and they swap kids back and forth. Somehow both of our boys ended up with the same teacher team. I still don't think they know how lucky the were to get the teachers they got. <br />
<br />
Can I just say that my kids have has some amazing teachers but I don't think any of them have made as much of an impression on Jay as Mr Tracey. He truly loves what he does and it shows. I am sure that once cannot teach (especially math) unless they truly love the subject. Mr Tracey is a self proclaimed math geek and he has a way of teaching the kids that I am sure non of them have ever said 'when are we EVER going to use this?' Anyway, Jay saw a picture of a Sudoku quilt and (being a math geek himself) thought it was genius!!! Right about this time, the boys found out that not only was Mr Tracey's wife pregnant but that they were doubly blessed with twin girls on the way. As is my tradition to make teacher gifts and I had already made a quilt for <a href="http://fivemonkeyquilts.blogspot.com/2011/02/mrs-pennys-baby-quilt.html">Mrs. Penny's baby girl</a>, they boys decided that both the babies should have quilts too. We had already discussed the idea of making something that a math teacher would 'get'. They were on a mission to make matching sudoku quilts in shades of pink and purple. I talked them into making ONE that could be a wall hanging. <br />
<br />
So we picked out a few fabrics and he dug out a puzzle book and solved it for me. That became my pattern, which of course I didn't take a picture of for my blog (d'oh). This was a really fun one and I plan to make more of these in the future...maybe the math teachers will get these every year.<br />

If you haven't...lemme splain. I am one of 'those people' who insists on taking my reusable shopping bags to the grocery store. I have very strong opinions about not being wasteful and needlessly destroying this beautiful planet we live on. I have not gone completely hippie-living 'off the grid' or anything but I think that if you can do small things everyday to make a difference then DO IT! Not using plastic shopping bags that eventually end up in a landfill or even worse down the gullet of a whale is a simple, easy change we can make and make a small difference. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rf29TtcChFo/TgfP3KmLSpI/AAAAAAAAAjM/R0t-SZGQE0o/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rf29TtcChFo/TgfP3KmLSpI/AAAAAAAAAjM/R0t-SZGQE0o/s320/011.JPG" width="114" /></a>Now that you had to sit through my preaching, I will tell you what my usual rants consist of...I have a problem with people who do not possess the most basic common sense. As far as I am concerned, logic should be one of those things that all people should have a basic understating of. In addition, like traffic laws, there should be repercussions for not following the 'logic rules'. For example, if a customer comes into the market with a stack of reusable shopping bags, logic would indicate that she does NOT want her milk (that has a build in handle) in a plastic bag. She also does not want her 5 lb sac of potatoes (that are already in a bag) placed into TWO plastic bags, and so on and so forth. I swear I am going to make up business cards that offer classes in logical thinking...free of charge even. OK, I'm off my soap box...on to the crafty item. ;)</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I do keep them around for cleaning out the cat box.</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I found this pattern somewhere some time ago and have finally gotten around to making it. <br />
I signed up for a hot pad exchange a couple months back, yes I know it has taken me forever to blog about it. Life has taken over lately so I haven't done a lot of things! Anyway, I am catching up by posting this. My exchange partner was <a href="http://auntyhennys.blogspot.com/">Helen</a>. I LOVE it! She did some homework on my blog and based it on my post about <a href="http://fivemonkeyquilts.blogspot.com/2011/02/daffodils.html">daffodils</a>. Between that and all my 'monkeys' she made this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L_NQQ5Ecu3s/TgXukGWZokI/AAAAAAAAAiU/K9GB58fNDQw/s1600/004+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L_NQQ5Ecu3s/TgXukGWZokI/AAAAAAAAAiU/K9GB58fNDQw/s320/004+%25282%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P9b79OdKrio/TgXu5GUqakI/AAAAAAAAAiY/Qx4CicEKVvg/s1600/005+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P9b79OdKrio/TgXu5GUqakI/AAAAAAAAAiY/Qx4CicEKVvg/s320/005+%25282%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

</div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I did the same research on my exchange partner so this is <a href="http://fivemonkeyquilts.blogspot.com/2011/03/casserole-hot-pad-swap.html">one I made</a> for her. ;)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
